The space scene with Earth and background clouds helps developers with simpler code, especially simpler rendering. Additionally GPUs usually run more efficiently with fewer large VBOS, rather than many small VBOs.
This project loads just one texture and one vertex buffer object (VBO). The background texture includes room for more planets, or other sprites, as well. During rendering there's no need to switch VBOs or texture units with this effective, simple, WebGL technique.
